Strengthening IGM’s capacities within the Twinning Project, in cooperation with Sweden, Greece, and Romania

On May 6–7, the General Inspectorate for Migration hosted the coordination meeting for the Initial Work Plan under the Twinning Project “Strengthening the institutional capacity of the General Inspectorate for Migration for the implementation of the legislation on migration and asylum management in line with the EU acquis.”

The project's Initial Work Plan includes a series of activities aimed at assessing the current migration and asylum management system of the General Inspectorate for Migration of the Republic of Moldova. This will be achieved through expert missions and study visits focused on adopting best practices in preparation for the transposition of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum.

The Twinning Project “Strengthening the institutional capacity of the General Inspectorate for Migration for the implementation of the legislation on migration and asylum management in line with the EU acquis” consists of three components:

Component 1: Strengthening the institutional and administrative capacity of the Inspectorate in aligning with and implementing the EU acquis and best practices;

Component 2: Supporting national authorities in aligning their legislative framework on asylum, refugees, stateless persons, and foreigners with EU and international standards;

Component 3: Enhancing the state's capacity to respond to any increased influx of migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees, including their successful integration.

Sweden, as the leader of the project consortium, alongside Greece and Romania, will contribute to strengthening the IGM's capacity to align with the commitments undertaken by the Republic of Moldova in the context of its EU integration process under Chapter 24 “Justice, Freedom, and Security”, through the relevant institutions.

The Twinning Project is being implemented through a consortium involving the Swedish Migration Agency, the Centre of International and European Economic Law, the Hellenic Ministry of Migration and Asylum, and the Romanian General Inspectorate for Immigration. The project has a planned duration of 18 months.
