The General Inspectorate for Migration recently hosted a mission by two experts from the General Inspectorate for Immigration of Romania to assess the operational capacity of Moldova’s national migration system. The purpose of this visit was to evaluate how well the Republic of Moldova is prepared to manage migration and implement European Union legislation in this area.

During the mission, interviews were conducted with both IGM staff and representatives from the General Inspectorate of Border Police and the National Investigation Inspectorate of the General Police Inspectorate. The aim was to review procedures applied in Romania and Moldova, identify best practices, and formulate recommendations to address any challenges identified. A meeting was also held with the IOM Mission to Moldova, an important partner in the migration management process, during which ongoing projects and the support provided to IGM were presented.

This expert mission took place within the framework of the Twinning Project "Strengthening the Capacity of the General Inspectorate for Migration to Implement Legislation on Migration and Asylum in Line with the EU Acquis", Component 1: Strengthening the institutional and administrative capacity of the Inspectorate regarding the alignment and implementation of the EU acquis and best practices.

The project is implemented by a consortium of three EU Member States – Sweden, Greece, and Romania – with Sweden as the project leader. The goal is to support IGM in strengthening its capacity to meet Moldova’s commitments under Chapter 24 "Justice, Freedom, and Security" of the EU integration process. The project will be implemented over 18 months, starting from 01.04.2025, with a total budget of EUR 1.25 million to carry out the planned activities.
