An Agreement on readmission ratified between Moldova and Azerbaijan

The Cabinet of Ministers ratified the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan on readmission. The agreement was signed by the interior ministers of the two countries on May 24, 2024. Ratification of the agreement will facilitate the procedure of exchange of information, identification and readmission of persons who do not fulfill or no longer fulfill the conditions for entry, stay or residence on the territory of both states, as well as facilitate the transit of such persons.

The main objective of the agreement is to establish a mechanism for cooperation between competent authorities in the area of readmission of persons residing illegally, clearly setting out obligations regarding the readmission of own nationals, stateless persons and nationals of other states, as well as readmission procedures, transit operations, transfer conditions and means of transportation, related costs, escorts and other related issues.

At the same time, the agreement provides for the creation of a bilateral legal framework of cooperation aimed at facilitating collaboration between the police authorities of Azerbaijan and those of the Republic of Moldova in order to prevent, detect and investigate crimes related to trafficking in human beings, forced labor and illegal migration.

Currently, the Republic of Moldova has signed 14 readmission agreements. Readmission agreements represent an important tool for ensuring effective migration management and strengthening the national security of the signatory countries.
