The General Inspectorate for Migration (GIM) answers the top 5 most frequently asked questions recently posed by foreigners to the GIM Hotline. We regularly provide answers and clarity on topics of concern to GIM beneficiaries.

  1. I left with temporary protection status last year. Now that I’m back, do I need to obtain this status again?
    If you have returned to the country that granted you temporary protection, your status may no longer be valid. However, by scanning the QR code on the ID card of the temporary protection beneficiary, you can check your legal status.
  2. Who can apply for asylum?
    Any foreign national or stateless person who expresses the intention to seek a form of protection can apply for asylum.
  3. Is it possible to submit the documents for the extension of the right of residence 2–4 months before it expires?
    Yes, documents for the extension of the right of residence can be submitted 2–4 months before the expiry date, but no later than 15 or 30 days prior to expiration, depending on the specific case.
  4. I want to obtain the right of residence. I am from Romania, and I’m wondering whether the criminal record certificate needs to be notarized.
    Criminal record certificates issued by the Romanian authorities do not need to be notarized in order to obtain the right of residence in the Republic of Moldova.
  5. My residence permit has expired. What fine do I have to pay?
    When a residence permit expires, foreigners must leave the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
