IGM Responds: Top 5 frequently asked questions

The General Inspectorate for Migration (IGM) answers the top 5 frequently asked questions addressed by foreigners at the IGM Green Line in the recent period. We will respond regularly and clarify the topics that concern IGM beneficiaries.

  1. Can I submit the documents to extend the residence permit 2-3 months before the expiration date?

For extending the right of residence, documents can be submitted before its expiration, but no later than 15/30 days, depending on the case.

  1. If I have a provisional residence permit as a volunteer for 3 years, what can I do to continue staying in the country, how can I extend it, or what is the procedure to receive another residence permit for volunteering purposes?

According to art. 41, para. (3), of Law no. 200/2010 regarding the regime of residence of foreigners, the right of provisional residence for volunteer activities is extended for a cumulative period of up to 3 years. Upon expiration of this period, the right and residence permit can no longer be extended.

We emphasize that according to art. 84, para. (7) of Law no. 200/2010, foreigners temporarily and legally present can remain on the territory of the Republic of Moldova only until the date when the right of stay established by visa, residence permit, or confirmation of right of stay ends; afterward, they are subject, as applicable, to the general conditions of entry, stay, or residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.

  1. If I need to get an approval for family reunification and at the same time I need to make an invitation for the foreign citizen, which procedure is done first, or can I schedule for both simultaneously? Do I need 2 separate appointments or is one appointment enough?

The request for issuing the invitation and the approval for family reunification are distinct procedures and are submitted separately. Therefore, for each procedure, a separate appointment is required.

Both requests are submitted on the same day (simultaneously).

  1. Can I present health insurance in an online format?

Health insurance can be presented also in electronic format, provided it is valid and verifiable. Thus, the authenticity and validity of the document can be confirmed through the corresponding verification systems.

  1. Can I apply for temporary protection if I have a residence permit that expires in one month?

Temporary protection is an exceptional form of protection granted on the territory of the Republic of Moldova in the case of a massive and spontaneous influx of displaced persons who cannot return to their country of origin.

We recommend consulting the categories of persons who, according to Government Decision no. 21/2023, can benefit from the granting of temporary protection in the Republic of Moldova.

As a holder of a residence right, you have the opportunity to request its extension for a new term. Upon meeting the legal conditions, you will benefit from legal and continuous residence for well-determined periods.

If there are other topics that concern you, the operators of the IGM Green Line at the number 0 8000 2715 will help you find the best solution.
