Provisional stay

Foreigners who wish to take up residence in the Republic of Moldova for a period longer than 90 days shall apply for provisional stay (provisional residence).

The right of provisional stay may be granted for purposes of:

In order to get the right of provisional stay, foreigners will come in person at the One-stop-shop for the Documentation of Foreigners (Chisinau Municipality, 124 Stefan cel Mare Street) or at one of the regional directorates of the General Inspectorate for Migration (Balti Municipality: 12 Dostoevsky Street; Comrat Municipality: 22 Comsomolului Street) with the application for provisional stay, completed and signed.

For this purpose, the documents (in original and copy) must be submitted at least 30 days before the authorized end of foreigner’s stay in the Republic of Moldova. EU citizens, foreign investors and aliens immigrating for job purpose shall submit the documents at least 15 days before the authorized end of their stay in the Republic of Moldova.


The application for granting/extension of the right of provisional stay will be reviewed within 30 days. Applications from EU citizens, foreign investors and immigrants for work purposes will be reviewed within 15 days. At the foreigner's request, this period may be reduced to 10 days upon payment of the appropriate fees. 

If the alien fails to respect the deadline for submitting the application for granting/extension of the right to stay, he/she will be subject to an

administrative penalty that needs to be paid in order to continue the application/extension process.

The foreigner can also apply for permanent stay which allows establishing residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, if the following conditions are met:

The foreigner holds the right of temporary residence for family reunification for at least 3 years

The foreigner holds the right of temporary residence for a period of 5 years - for other categories

The application for granting of the right of permanent stay will be reviewed within 90 days. At the foreigner's request, this period may be reduced to 1 or 2 months upon payment of the appropriate fees.
