The integration and support of refugees, the alignment with EU legislation and the strengthening of asylum systems were key topics discussed during the meeting between the Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi. The discussion highlighted Moldova’s achievements in processing asylum applications, granting temporary protection, and cooperation with UNHCR (Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees) to implement solutions that ensure safety of refugees and support their integration into local communities.
Filippo Grandi commended the generosity and hospitality of the Moldovan people, emphasizing that Moldova serves as a model for other countries. He also reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to assisting Moldova in developing infrastructure and building institutional capacity for effective migration management.
"We are committed to helping refugees not only overcome immediate challenges, but also become active members of our society. Together, we will continue to create lasting solutions for those in need, proving that Moldova is a small country with a big heart," stated the Minister.
"The IGM is committed to examining all asylum cases in accordance with established legal procedures, respecting international standards, and making individual decisions based on the circumstances of each applicant," Tatiana Ciumaș said.
She noted that in 2025-2026, as a result of legislative changes in the field of asylum, the process of examining and deciding on asylum applications will be regionalized, with the aim of improving the procedure and decentralizing decision-making.
Additionally, the integration of foreigners remains a national priority, supported through a holistic approach that will involve both central and local public administration, as well as non-governmental organizations, providing opportunities for active participation in society for all foreigners present in the country.
The discussion also covered shared priorities for the near future, including expanding support for vulnerable people, digitizing processes, developing long-term integration services and enhancing refugees’ access to education and healthcare.
