This week, at the General Inspectorate for Migration (GIM), a new round of technical assistance was launched, provided by specialists from the Swedish Migration Agency, within activity 3.1.1, “Assessment of Contingency Planning in Cases of Increased Inflows of Migrants, Asylum Seekers and Refugees – Reception and Asylum.”
The purpose of this activity is to evaluate the existing crisis and early warning system, as well as to analyze GIM’s capacity to respond to a potential surge in migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. In cooperation with GIM officers and representatives from other subdivisions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Swedish experts are identifying current gaps and formulating recommendations to improve contingency planning and mechanisms for managing migration-related crises.
During the mission, alongside working sessions and technical consultations, the experts conducted a visit to the Temporary Accommodation Centre of the GIM, where they analyzed aspects related to institutional preparedness and the logistics required to handle a potential large-scale influx of migrants and asylum seekers. The visit provided an opportunity for a practical assessment of how operational procedures and interinstitutional cooperation mechanisms are applied in emergency situations.
In addition, meetings and thematic discussions were held with representatives of the General Inspectorate of the Border Police, the Centre for Combating Trafficking in Persons within the National Inspectorate of Investigations, the Inspectorate for Operational Management, the General Inspectorate of Carabinieri, as well as the Medical Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
These consultations enabled a direct exchange of experience and perspectives on crisis management, identification of challenges faced in crisis response, and formulation of recommendations to improve existing mechanisms.
This activity serves as a valuable platform for sharing best practices between the Republic of Moldova and the Kingdom of Sweden, contributing to strengthening the institutional capacities of GIM to respond efficiently and in a coordinated manner to emergency situations caused by increased migratory flows.
The Twinning Project is implemented by a consortium composed of three European Union Member States – Sweden (project leader), Greece, and Romania – and aims to strengthen GIM’s capacity to align with the commitments undertaken by the Republic of Moldova within the European integration process, under Chapter 24 – “Justice, Freedom and Security.”
