World Refugee Day – Solidarity and Continued Commitment to Protect Those Forced to Flee Their Country

On the occasion of World Refugee Day, marked annually on June 20, the General Inspectorate for Migration (GIM) reiterates its firm commitment to protecting the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in the Republic of Moldova.

This day serves as a moment of reflection, solidarity, and recognition of the courage shown by those who have been forced to flee due to armed conflict, persecution, or other critical humanitarian situations.

The Republic of Moldova has been a party to the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol since 2001 (Law No. 677/23.11.2001). With the support of international partners, especially UNHCR, our country has developed a strong legal and institutional framework that ensures compliance with international commitments and the full granting of rights to recognized refugees and individuals under humanitarian protection – a complementary form of refugee status.

The GIM pays particular attention to strengthening refugee protection by facilitating their social and economic integration. Emphasis is placed on interinstitutional cooperation involving central authorities, local public administrations, and civil society organizations.

In the context of recent regional and international challenges, the GIM has intensified efforts to ensure effective and humane management of asylum and international protection processes, in line with international standards and human rights principles.

As of today, the Asylum System in the Republic of Moldova includes:

  • 704 asylum seekers;
  • 214 refugees;
  • 513 beneficiaries of humanitarian protection.

Between March 1, 2022 and June 20, 2025, the GIM issued a total of 75,474 identity documents for beneficiaries of temporary protection, of which:

  • 18,211 for minors;
  • 57,263 for adults.

The General Inspectorate for Migration will continue to support the integration of refugees and work in partnership with international and local actors to offer safety, dignity, and real opportunities to those who have found shelter in the Republic of Moldova.
